  5.     For 15 years, the right of Alaskans to smoke grass at home
  6. has been as commonplace as the privilege of watching a moose
  7. graze in the backyard. But antidrug crusaders, who expect to
  8. be bolstered this week by a visit from federal drug czar
  9. William Bennett, are pressing voters to recriminalize the
  10. private possession of small amounts of marijuana -- made legal
  11. in 1975 by a court privacy decision -- this November. Says
  12. Marie Majewske of Alaskans for the Recriminalization of
  13. Marijuana: "When a drug is perceived to be socially acceptable,
  14. it is used and abused a great deal more."

  16.     Nonsense, say opponents. The ballot measure targets one of
  17. the least dangerous drugs, they claim, and ignores the far more
  18. serious problems posed by alcohol in Alaska. More
  19. fundamentally, argue ads launched by Alaskans for Privacy this
  20. month, the campaign is "about the government telling you what
  21. you can eat, drink or smoke in your own home." Poll tallies
  22. taken before the latest privacy offensive show the anti-pot
  23. initiative passing 60% to 40%.
